Community Festival Spotlights Canadian Roots Performers

For the last 18 years, quietly nestled in the small southern Ontario town of Pefferlaw, The Eaglewood Folk Festival has been a popular destination for festival fans to squeeze in one last weekend getaway before the onslaught of September. Taking place on the weekend of August 24 to 26, Eaglewood offers camping, jamming, kids programming and an impressive array of Canadian folk/roots performers.

This year's lineup includes a great mix of established veterans & exciting up-and-comers. The reigning regent of rural songwriting, Fred Eaglesmith, will be there, as well as the utterly unique songwriting genius, Bob Snider and folk legend Penny Lang. Fans of Prairie Oyster will get a chance to hear their pedal steel player, Dennis Delorme, as he accompanies the tortured twang of veteran Cris Cuddy.

Of course, part of the appeal of attending a weekend music festival is discovering a favourite new act. To that end, unsuspecting audiences will love hearing the rising blues-soul powerhouse Treasa Levasseur, the exciting gypsy bluegrass trio The Cracker Cats (from Saskatchewan) and the indie-art-cabaret experience of Claire Jenkins avec Band. And fans are already talking about the return of last year's festival favourites The Undesirables and Dala.

For the family, Eaglewood offers a Saturday afternoon filled with family programming. Ken Whiteley (Raffi's producer) will perform songs from his latest kid's album, Join The Band. The super-fun Sho, Mo & The Monkey Bunch will get kids up and grooving and Celtic Rathskallions will sing about the adventures of a little girl named Maddie. The whole afternoon will be hosted by the wonderful Magoo. Plus, there are tons of crafts, delicious local food and a real native village for the whole family to explore.

The Festival takes place on the completely accessible Eaglewood resort, a 45 minute drive due north of Ajax. Many festival-goers choose to camp on site, either in quiet spots or near jam-friendly campfires. Any musicians should definitely bring an instrument as there is also an open stage where anyone can sign up to perform.

Family fun, fantastic performers and late-night jamming - The Eaglewood Folk Festival is a great last blast of summer.
