HISTORY

This page contains our story but we know it's not the only one. Everyone who comes to Eaglewood has a different reason for doing so and a different reason for returning. That's also part of the Eaglewood history.

Eaglewood was a labor of love and a vision brought to fruition with a great deal of time and devotion.  In 1989, Cheryl Gaudet stood on the new deck of the main house at Eaglewood Resort and imagined hundreds of people gathered from all walks of life and heard wonderful music and smelled delicious food and saw artisans selling their wares and campfires at night.  It would be a musician's festival dream come true.  Home cooked food, comfortable places to sleep and lots of opportunity to play with other great songwriters. With the organizational help of her partner Joe Ross, the festival became a reality under the name “Eaglewood Earth Festival”.  The event was privately produced, with assistance from not-for-profit organizations, until not-for-profit status was granted to Eaglewood Earth Festival Inc. in March of 1993.

In its first three years, the festival had a wide focus and mandate which included, along with the promotion of folk arts and accessibility, the desire to promote awareness of Native Culture and environmental concerns.  These last aims were judged unwieldy in their scope at the time and in 1993 the mandate became somewhat more focused, though promotion of Native Artists and their work remain a part of the group’s direction.

In 1993, Tim Harrison was hired as artistic director and, since that time, the festival has become a festival of folk music based on the model of early Mariposa, that is to say an event featuring workshops and concerts given by various artists from differing folk music genres.

In 1996, the name of the event was changed to “Eaglewood Folk Festival” to more accurately reflect the nature of its programme.

Also, at this time, the festival established a regular annual date which is always the weekend before Labour Day each year.

In 2000, Eaglewood Folk Festival welcomed a new Artistic Director, Doug McArthur. Doug is a well respected member of the folk music community with 30 years of experience in both the performance and administrative ends of festivals.  He is also well grounded in the internet and use of computers to assist festival work.

Structure

The Eaglewood Folk Festival is an incorporated not-for-profit business, structured with a volunteer board of directors, volunteer staff, and one paid Artistic Director whose job description includes many other facets of the festival.  Most administration, ticket sales, the writing of promotional materials, mailing list maintenance etc., are carried out by the Artistic Director, however other duties involving the festival and running of benefit concert events are carried out by a seventy-person volunteer base.  Volunteers are comprised of women and men from across Ontario from such diverse communities as London, Burlington, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Keswick, Toronto and Pefferlaw.

Decisions are made by the board of directors with consultation given by staff.  Directors live in various areas of Ontario.

ORGANIZATION PROFILE

Mandate/Mission

The Eaglewood Folk Festival is dedicated to the promotion of traditional and contemporary Canadian acoustic folk music and to making this art form accessible to all.

The Eaglewood Folk Festival stages its events in accessible venues only. Our annual three-day festival is held on the Eaglewood Resort whose aim is to provide accessible accommodation and camping, plus recreational facilities for everyone. The festival provides its programmes in Braille, Large Type, and taped formats, and evening concerts are American Sign Language interpreted. We are currently arranging for all workshop and daytime programming to be signed as well. We also subsidize accessible buses to and from the event.

Further, our ticket prices are kept deliberately low in order to provide this art form to all, regardless of individual economic circumstances.
